Argentina (Spanish: [a?xen?tina]) is the official name of the Republic of Argentina in South America.  Its capital is Buenos Aires.  The official language is Spanish and has a population of 45,809,000. [17] The currency of Argentina is the Argentine Peso.  Argentina is the second largest country in South America after Brazil and the eighth largest in the world.  Argentina has the third largest economy in Latin America and a high standard of living.

Percentage of Argentine populations are European, most of whom are descendants of Italian and Spanish immigrants.  92% of the people in this country are Christians, 1.9% are Muslims and the rest are atheists or followers of other religions.

 The present-day region of Argentina used to be one of the colonies of the Spanish Empire called the Governorate of Rio della Plata.  With the start of the Argentine War of Independence, the people of the region declared independence, and after the independence of Argentina, civil wars broke out that lasted for most of the nineteenth century.  During the twentieth century, the country faced several coups and periods of political instability, as well as economic crises.

 The Falkland Islands are located along the Argentine plateau but are under British control.  These islands are in dispute between the two countries.  The Argentine army captured the Falkland Islands on April 2, 1982, but British forces managed to retake the islands on May 20 of that year.  250 British and 650 Argentine soldiers were killed in the war.
