Spain (Spanish: España) Officially known as the Kingdom of Spain (Spanish: Reino de España) is an independent country on the Iberian Peninsula in Western Europe and a member of the European Union.  The mainland of Spain is bordered on the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea and Gibraltar, on the north and northeast by France, Andorra and the Bay of Biscay, and on the west and northwest by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean.  Spain"s border with Portugal "1214 km long" is the longest integrated border in the European Union.

The official language of the Spanish people is Spanish.  Spanish is the mother tongue of 483 million people and the total number of speakers of the language reaches 570 million.  The wise man first set foot on the Iberian Peninsula about 35,000 years ago.  About 200 BC, the region came under Roman rule and was called Hispania.  Hispania was conquered by the Germanic tribes in the Middle Ages and later by the Moors.  In the 15th century, after the intergovernmental marriages of Catholic rulers and the unification of these governments, as well as the complete fall of the Andalusia and its recapture by Muslim morons in 1492, Spain emerged as a unified state.  Early in modern times, Spain became a powerful world empire, and the Spaniards entered and settled in the Americas as one of the first conquerors of the New World.  The more than 500 million Hispanics living in the United States are a legacy left by the Spaniards on the continent.

 Today, Spain is a democratic country with a parliamentary government under the monarchy.  Spain is a developed country and the 13th largest economy in the world in terms of GDP.  It also has a high standard of living.  Spain is a member of the United Nations, NATO, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and the European Union.
